evaluation questions

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product is supposed to be a crime thriller; initially our product uses conventions of real media products. The opening shots are backed with diegetic sounds of a police siren, which introduces the initial theme of crime in this media product – this theme is something that is typical of a thriller film. The setting of the film is in a block of flats; this urban environment is also a convention that is typical of a thriller film. Next, the clothing and props worn by the character at the start of our film are typical of this crime thriller genre film. The tracksuit bottoms, black jacket, trainers and the gun carried by this character also strengthen the theme of crime in our media product. The editing and camera style of the opening sequence is also typical of a thriller film as it includes; hard cuts, some interesting transitions and fast paced editing. In these instances our product uses conventions of real media products to validate itself as a conventional crime thriller media product, but it is the storyline and characterisation after the opening sequence that makes our media product progress to develop and challenge conventions of a similarly categorised media product.

the setting for our film.
After the focus of the film has shifted from the first character to Theo’s character, this Media product changes from using conventions of the thriller genre to challenging and developing conventions. Although the themes of violence and crime are still prevalent in the film from the use of the gun as a prop, and the diegetic sound of the guns shot. Also the camera shots create focus on the gun. The setting remains the same but the editing changed from fast paced to slow paced, an interesting and different editing style for a film in the thriller genre. The protagonist character – Theo, is one that challenges the conventions of similar media products as he is not a typical hero character. His bumbling character and lack of street knowledge is emphasised by this counter-typical slow paced editing, the camera focus on him playing with the gun, and the
way he runs away from the scene of the crime towards the end of the film. This strange take on the hero character is how our media product seems to challenge the typical story line of a thriller as he ends up being the character that is seen to commit the crime. However it is really only the characterization of this protagonist in our media product that challenges the conventions of similarly categorized real media products.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product was thriller film opening. It featured a youthful cast of three characters. The ways of representing these characters would vary from the clothes and props, to the setting, and the editing used to portray them.
The first character; played by Charlie Lavender was dressed to resemble a teenager from an urban environment. This led us to dress him in tracksuit bottoms, trainers and a black hooded jacket. The clothes we chose to use for this character were designed to make him look like he was from an urban environment. Also the fact that his character is supposed to be running away from the police sirens at the very start of the film shows that this teenager from an urban background is related to crime – gun crime in particular. This in itself is very stereotypical of a teenager from an urban area in relation to crime or clothes that people from that social group would wear.
The setting is in a block of flats in the centre of town, this setting for the character associated with crime to be running though is also stereotypical of his social group as people dressed in these clothes and who are involved in criminal activities are largely expected by society to live in these areas. The editing used when this character is largely fast paced, this is to make him seem faster and more reckless running through the estate. These characteristics making him seem more desperate to get away from the police and to get rid of the gun.
The next character, played by Theo Emerson is supposed to come across as a young working adult. Due to this character profile he is dressed in dark smart trousers and a smart black jacket. His character is designed to be a small source of comedy in the film. He is a bumbling character who comes across as less streetwise than the character previously making this a somewhat negative stereotype of this young adult.
The editing around Theo’s character is very slow paced; it contains many tracking shots and less hard cuts. This is to mirror the slower lifestyle of an adult’s life. This is negatively stereotypical of an adult in comparison to the younger character.
The final character is someone who is barely in the film, he is portrayed as a teenager who skateboards past Theo and is accidentally shot. As he is skating we decided to dress him in skinny jeans, vans trainers and a green jacket. These are supposed to be typical clothes worn by a skater type character.

3) what kind of media institution might distribute your media product?

Adulthood - a film similar to ours, produced by Cipher Films
The kind of institution that would distribute our media product would be a company that has previously distributed products similar to ours. Our product is a crime thriller set in the UK on a council estate which deals with the themes of violence and crime with a youthful cast. Companies that have distributed films with criteria similar to that would be Cipher Films and Revolver Entertainment that have released both kidulthood and adulthood; two films with similar themes, settings camera styles and of a similar genre. Cipher Films or Revolver Entertainment would distribute our product because it has a very specific target audience and would be popular film in the Uk which is just like other films that they have distributed.

4) who would be the audience for your media product?
For our media product we have chosen the thriller genre, and as you can see on our blog (target audience) has the figures in which the audience these films attract, the Pearl & Dean Film website shows a profile of the audience for every film that the company show. As an example the profile of the Horror film Paranormal Activity; this film has a near enough 50/50 gender split showing that there was equal interest taken by both men and women. As the film was rated a 15 by the BBFC  the age range of this films audience starts at 15 years old. the majority of the audience (55%) falls under the 15-34 age range. As for classes the specification is slightly confusing so here is the categories simplified.
A's = bankers, lawyers, directors, and other high powered jobs
B's = teachers, nurses, managers, graphic designers etc
C's = skilled jobs, office workers, plumbers, electricians
D's = non-skilled jobs
This class split shows that the majority of the audience is in class group C1, which is skilled jobs and office workers.
With regards to our film we have decided to use the profile of two films with similar settings and with what we think have similar target audiences; About a Boy and Harry Brown. About a boy because of the city setting and intended age range. And Harry Brown because of the themes and setting the block of flats and inner city setting, also the themes of gun crime and violence. So our target audience would one similar to Harry Brown or About A Boy, and i think it would be a someone in the 15's-30 age range and would be more likely to be a boy than a girl. Also a person viewing our film would be a middle to lower class person.

5) Target Audience

Our film didn’t challenge the typical thriller genre and the story line didn’t suit a stereotypical story to what you usually see in thriller films, so the audience won’t be mainstream but will be highly specific and niche.

The targeted audience age range was from 15-35, dominantly males similar to Adulthood but with a broad class and ethnicity. Because we made our film very British, and we said earlier that it would be produced by a British Independent Production company such as Cipher, I don’t think if our film was exhibited in other countries such as the US it would be a success at all because of the locations, setting and characters the urban genre makes the audience very restricted and limited.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the construction of our short film we have learnt how to film on the digital video cameras, we all used the cameras during the construction of our preliminary tasks - a 30 second video. And also during the filming of our actual media product we all had some time using the camera. For example when Simon was acting in the film either myself or Haseeb would be filming and while I was acting either Simon or Haseeb would be using the camera. We have therefor learnt how to record on the camera, how to zoom in and out,  and also how to take still shots using the video camera’s photo setting.

Also we had to edit together the shots we captured with the cameras in order to create our film. this editing was done on the editing program called Final Cut Pro, on the computers in the media suite. This editing involved importing clips from the camera to the computer, selecting the correct shots and then cutting the seperate shots together. Also we learnt how to use the video transitions to link certain shots together on the program giving our a film a more fluid feel. We had to edit the sound of the clips also; certain clips had sound that was far too loud and was not in keeping with the rest of the film so we had to change the sound levels and at times even copy the sound of one clip over other clips to keep the sound at a constant.

We had to create a backing track for our film, this was created using the program called Garage Band. We each had some level of input to the creation of this background music and also included some diegetic sound to make some of the things happening on screen seem more believeable, fo example; the police car siren at the start of the film when the character is running. We learnt how to use this program Garage Band to a level that enabled us to create a believeable array of sounds and a contemporary background track.

Lastly we had to create a blog on our film, we all had to add posts to the blog and we all learnt how to upload videos, photos, maps and essays to the blog in order to document our progress during the contruction of this media product.

Overall we all learnt how to use each piece of technology to a certain degree.
7. looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
from our preliminary task i feel we have learnt a  lot in the form of the 4 technical codes, sound, camera, editing and mis-en-scene. as we look back on our preliminary now we can automatically identify mistakes we have made. firstly we weren’t big fans of editing as we didn’t have any experience in this field, but as we edited this clip it gave us some help in handling the software, this resulted in us being confident and also when it came to our final film we had 3 people wanting to edit the film, unlike the preliminary when know one wanted to edit.
Secondly sound was another area in which we have learnt a great deal in, both in non-diegetic and diegetic sounds, putting sound on to our clip was a great struggle at the beginning for all of us ,but as we started playing with sound we got the hang of it and now were not perfect but we have improved a great deal, now as you can see in our final clip we have added sound in certain areas to give the film a bit of tension to engage the teenage audience. garage band was a software in which we had to get our mind around in order to handle sound the reason for this is when adding sound on a clip we  had to do so through by importing or even exporting the sound from garage band. which made it easier for us to do.

Essay 3 - Textual Analysis of a Similar Film

A film similar to ours would be Kidulthood. I think that this film would be good to analyse because it contains many similar elements to ours.

Mise-En Scene - Props

There were a few different props that we had to use in our film.
  • we used a pellet gun in our film to pretend to be a gun. We chose this because it was all black and looked very realistic. It would have been very unbeliveable if a character gets shot with something that looks like a toy - this is why the gun had to look realistic.
  •
black bin bag, this prop was chosen as a reason for Theo's character to walk down the stairs and find the gun. The bag needed to be big enough so that it would not fit through the bin shoot, meaning that Theo would have to walk down to the bin room where he finds the gun.

Simon's character makes a short appearance on a skateboard before he is shot. We chose the skateboard as a prop for Simon's character because he needed a way of entering the shot at speed and grabbing the viewers attention.

analysis of previous AS year film.

Mise-En Scene - Costume

With regards to costume we decided to choose clothes that suited the characters roles in the film.

The character with the gun is going to be a younger character, the inspiration we took from the film Kidulthood was the urban-youth culture and we thought that this should show through in the costume of the character with the gun.

  • trainers
  • hoodie/jacket
  • jeans/tracksuit bottoms
These were the clothes that our group came up with for the character holding the gun. We had a limited budget for our film so we decided to use our own clothes. I decided to select trainers that would be a common brand and went for these.                                        ---->
We decided to opt for a black hooded jacket that zips up to the chin. This goes with the idea that this character is running from the law and has his hood up, and is all zipped up to hide his face whilst running.
This is the jacket we chose in the end.
<----

These are are tracksuit pants the 'criminal' is wearing, we both decided that they were suited best for the chracters personality.

<----

The gun we used was a real pellet gun that shoots little plastic bullets, this worked really well for the film because it looks authentic.

Essay 2 - Conventions of a thriller genre

Conventions of the thriller genre, analysis of 2 thriller openings

We have decided to analyse two film openings, these are from the films; Collateral and City of God. These two were chosen particularly because of their similarity to our film in terms of genre and plot. Especially Collateral due to the spontaneous storyline and how innocent people become involved in situations.
To begin with the conventions of the thriller genre, particularly the sub-genre of action thriller are made clear in the openings of Collateral through the camera shat and angles, sound, editing and mise en scene.
The opening of this film begins to conform the conventions of the thriller genre initially, the mise en scene of the opening; the setting for this film is in Los Angeles. Thrillers are often set in large cities; also the main character appears to be a cab driver, this simple and ordinary profession is also typical of the genre. The recurring theme of juxtaposition – unusual things happening to ordinary people is typical of the thriller genre and this ordinary job combined with the slow paced editing of the opening sequence creates and calm mood which is going to be contrasted with something chaotic later on in the film. This comes in the form of an unknown character who offers a lot of money to be driven around all night - this in itself could be considered the out of the ordinary occurrence.
This mystery character appears to be an assassin - the inclusion of this profession or theme of organised crime is also a convention of a thriller. The clothes and props used by this character are that of a bussiness man, he is wearing an expensive suit, looks well groomed and carrys a briefcase. The clothes, props and look of Tom Cruise's character make him appear stong and powerful, another convention of the typical "bag guy" character in a thriller film, this creates a large contrast with the clothes and props of Jamie Foxx's character - the cab driver. He wears casual clothes, wears glasses - a prop that give a sense of vulnerability to his character contrasting with the powerful character of Tom Cruise. This direct contrast between the good and bad characters is typical of any film let alone a thriller.
In the film; City of god, there are many elements that are typical of the thriller genre. This film falling under the sub-genre of action thriller. The sound in the opening seconds of the film alone portray the contrast between the calm (the non-diegetic sound of the background music) and the high tempo (the diegetic sound of a knife being sharpened on a rock). The contrasting sound combined with the flashes of video on the screen  furthers the idea of contrast and juxtaposition in the thriller genre. This initial portrayal of contrast between calm, everyday environments and violent, shocking events foreshadows to the viewer that the film is a thriller as they have been shocked within the first few seconds of the movie. The inclusion of knives in the opening few seconds of the film also introduce the idea of violence and crime to the film very early on - another typical convention of a thriller.
The editing in the opening scene of City of God is very fast paced, it contains elements of montage editing all focused around the killing and preparation of chickens, this shows the viewer a theme of death and violence and combined with the fast paced non-diegetic  background music creates an intense atmosphere for the start of the film and gives the viewer the feeling that the film is building up toward a climax.
The chase scene where the chicken is being pursued through the favela by the group of kids is a take on the typical convention of the "chase scene". The inclusion of this scene in the film shows an almost cliched convention of the thriller or action-thriller movie.
The setting of this film opening; in a favela - is also typical of a thriller, the favela seems to be the place where the bad guys live in. It is typical because the evil characters are often portrayed as living in lower class and run down areas.

Mise En Scene - Setting

We filmed our clip in windsor, we decided to film in windsor due to the fact that it was closer for all of my group members to access and also its near our school which gave us the benefit to come and contact the teachers if anything went wrong. The place where with shot our film was in a block of flats (Ward royal), the reason why filmed in the block of flats was becasue of the the stereotypical opinions of people that gun crime happens around block of flats. We filmed on a cold day which indicated that something is going to happen, this added a tension to our film and we didnt get give to much away at the beginning, which once again engaged the viewers to our film.

Essay 1 - Conventions of a thriller opening

Conventions of a thriller opening.

There are a few recurring elements or themes in a film that are typical of the thriller genre. These include; violence, crime, drug use and tension. These themes are conveyed to the viewer through the use of camera, sound, editing and mise en scene.
Another key point to mention about films falling under the thriller genre is the recurring use of juxtaposition, this means the inclusion of extraordinary events in ordinary circumstances and is something that is a common convention in a movie under the thriller genre.
The opening to a thriller film is what we are planning on doing for our coursework, and to make our film more believable and true to the constraints of the genre I have decided to analyse the openings of two thriller openings.
Die Hard 4.0 is a typical action thriller, its opening introduces the viewer to the typical elements of a thriller. Initially the main character, played by Bruce Willis is a way of displaying the general conventions of a thriller to the audience; the clothes and props used and worn by Willis in the opening sequence of this thriller are typical of the genre and make it clear to the viewer the type of film it is. The open scene shows Willis using a police badge and wearing typical masculine clothing, jeans and white t-shirt. The use of the police badge shows the involvement of the theme of crime in the film - making it typical of the genre.
The lighting and setting of this scene is also typical of the genre, the lighting in the dingy apartment is low-key, giving the scene a dark and depressing feel. This is a typical thriller setting, the underground or slightly derelict scenes or setting.
The comparison that the audience automatically makes between the protagonist – Willis and the inhabitant of the flat is another aspect of the thriller genre, and more specifically the action thriller genre, the sidekick character. This situation is typical and is more stereotypical because of the differences in stature between tall, rugged looking Willis and the thin and short sidekick character make this situation of sidekick and hero more clear to the audience.
The props used by the skinny character in this opening scene are also typical of the genre, the inclusion of the computers and the images shown on the computer screens make it obvious to the viewer that he is a computer hacker and the theme of cyber terrorism is one that occurs in many thrillers and is again something typical of the genre.
These individual elements of a thriller film, all occurring in the opening sequence are no doubt included to help the film to fit into certain stereotypes and to fit certain expectations of a film falling into that category of action thriller.

Inspirational Film Openings

We studied a number of different films in anticipation of our AS piece.
I watched the following films for inspiration for our film to decide wether or not to choose a thriller or horror film.

Paranormal Activity 3 - A horror film in a house setting. It uses a hand-held and simple video camera style of filming with limited special effects. This style of film would be easy to emulate and simple to edit due to the camera shots and limited effects. However, I feel that this style of filming with regards to horror may be a little bit cliche and wouldn't stand out.

I thought that this film would be good to look at with regards to horror in general, containing many themes typical of a horror film; The Supernatural, the juxtaposition of strange events happening in a normal setting, and jumpy, and suspenseful sound and editing.

Kidulthood - This is an urban thriller film. it features a young cast, aimed at a teenage audience. The themes of the film focus around gun and knife-crime, and youth culture. The fast paced editing, themes and urban setting and overall plot of how one event can shape the life of someone in just one day are all elements that I find interesting and think would be easy to emulate in our film.

The last film i chose to look at was Harry Brown, similar to Kidulthood - is an urban thriller that focuses on knife and gun crime. I found it intriguing the idea of how an innocent man can become involved in the criminal world by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

After looking at these three films we have decided that we are going to do a thriller based film. The themes and plotlines of the two action thriller films seem more attractive than that of the horror film.
Thus we came to the conclusion of shooting thriller film.

Target Audience (audience profile)

The Pearl & Dean Film website shows a profile of the audience for every film that the company show.
D's = non-skilled jobs

And Harry Brown because of the themes and setting; eg. the block of flats and inner city setting, also the themes of gun crime and violence.

This film, rated 12a by the BBFC is not a thriller, but was chosen because the setting and the intended age range is similar to what we want for our film. This film has a 40/60 male to female audience split, meaning that the film was more appealing to women than it was to men. The majority of the viewers for this film were aged over 45 (38%) and there is an even spread over the ages 15-44. As for the classes that viewed the film in the cinema the majority is in the Upper Classes - the A/B section. Meaning that the majority of the audience for this film were in higher paid jobs.

Harry Brown - an action thriller based in the UK. I chose to analyse this because of its similar storyline and similar themes that it includes. This film was rated 18 by the BBFC meaning that it was aimed at a young adult audience. The majority of the audience is in the 15-24 age bracket (32%) and there is a 63/37 percentage split in the gender of the audience 63% male and 37% female. The class split shows that the vast majority of the audience are in the lower classes with 58% in the c1 class group.

Music Video Ideas

the locations that we have chosen to shoot are video are the following: council estate where most gun crime occurs the possible places we visited were london, the reason for this was because london has the most crime rate. The second option and place we had was another estate in windsor near the school, we chose this due to the fact that it was closer to the school and we could access this facility anytime of the day. As you can see on above these are the 2 sites we visited in the pro-production of our film

"Image of 1-6 Ward Royal"After along time of discussing with the group and weighing the advantages  we came up with decision of filming in ward royal in windsor , there reason why we came up with this decision was due partially to the fact that, it would be easier for all our group members to get to and lastly it would have been to dangerous for us to film in the london council estate because of the crime rate.We had a fake which was our prop this would have caused us difficulties in london as the police are alert of terrorism,

BRAINSTORM. IDEAS FOR CLIP

Our idea.

For our thriller opening we have decided to focus on the action-thriller sub-genre. We decided to stick to this particular sub-genre because there are many different themes involved and settings that a thriller can take place in - leaving our group with lots of different and exciting options.
After looking at the conventions of a thriller movie we came up with a few options and themes of what our opening could include;
-Crime
-Violence
-Drugs
-Police
-Coincidence
This list alone left us with a number of options for our opening clip.

[insert picture of brainstorm]

We decided to take a crime based storyline.

The idea we came up with was to create drama and the typical thriller film scenario through an accidental shooting.

The issues that surrounded this were how the character would get a gun?

- this was solved by the start of the clip featuring a mysterious character who would be the person to bring the gun into the film.

- the character who received the gun would accidentally let it off and kill/injure an innocent person.

these are the main two ideas of the film that underpin the entire plot.

About

Hello, my name is Charlie and I am working with Simon and Haseeb. Our production name is STICKUP Productions. We are from Windsor Boys' School, and we are doing our AS media coursework. We decided to do a thriller based movie opening. After our choice to do a short film for our preliminary task in a similar genre.
